I've never had a cat until this year, when we had Rubie join us. Rubie is a male cat, named after the Rubik's Cube.
He's an indoor cat, and aside from trips to the vet, and he's always here in our flat and the small patch of outdoor space we are lucky enough to have. That's sort of a dim view of things, as I think he'd like being out and exploring more.
In the first song album of Superchunk's Indoor Living album, "Unbelievable Things," there's a lyric at the beginning, "Indoor living became all the rage."
The song seems to be about self-isolation, longing and disconnect. There's tension between appearance and reality, the hidden isolation behind a glamorous facade, and the frustration that can come from observing such a person from a distance. But the question of whether Superchunk's lyricists had a cat when they released their album and whether that cat might be the subject of the song is unresolved.
